Medicinal spa next to Europe’s only salt hill
Egerszalók is a village with a population of almost 2,000 people situated between the Mátra and the Bükk mountains in the valley of the Laskó stream, just 5km from Eger.
The appeal of the village lies in the natural beauty of the area, which offers tourists countless points of interest. Egerszalók’s main attraction is the thermal source springing from the depths of the earth in the south of the village and the salt hill created by the water flowing down the hillside. The salt deposits from the 65-68 C◦ medicinal water extremely rich in minerals continuously build the scalloped, white formations, which are such an impressive sight. The calcium-magnesium bicarbonate medicinal water also containing sodium and metasilicic acid has been given one of the best ratings in the category of sulphurous medicinal waters. The water was classified as medicinal by the health ministry in 1992. Over the years the salt hill thanks to its unique characteristics has become the symbol and trademark of the local area. Similar natural formations can only be found in two other places in the world: in the Asian part of Turkey in Pamukkale, and in the Yellowstone Park in the USA. In Europe it is unique.
The exclusive medicinal and wellness spa opened in Egerszalók on 13 July, 2007. The building is situated on the hillside with some of the pools lying in the beautiful valley. The built ground area of the spa is 10,844 m2, and it has a capacity of some 1,000 people at any given time. With a total water surface of 1,900 m2 it boasts a total of 17 outdoor and indoor pools. Medicinal water sitting pools, cave pool, whirlpool bath, adventure pools, children’s pools, Kneipp and echo pools ensure that both younger and older guests will be in their element. World-class wellness and fitness services are available to guests wishing to recuperate and unwind.
The wellness centre houses pampering baths and Thai massage rooms, which ensure perfect revitalisation thanks to their calming, stress-relieving effect. The spa’s exclusive sauna world will refresh both your body and mind. In the indoor section a Finnish sauna, steam bath, aroma cabin and whirlpool bath can be found. What is more, a Finnish log sauna and a Russian log sauna have been built in the sauna courtyard. The sauna rituals are unique: guests can choose ice, beer, honey and sea salt ceremonies. High-quality beauty care is offered in the wellness area. We use the exclusive products of the Germanie de Capuccini company to offer our quests real regeneration. In the beauty salons experienced cosmeticians welcome guests with premium beauty care products and professional equipment. In the salons manicure, pedicure and solarium services are also available. The water park is due to be completed by the 2011 tourism season and its adventure pool will welcome guests wishing to have fun and relax. Linked to the water park there will be an entertainment centre, which will be home to a self-service restaurant, beer-garden, bowling alley and sports ground. In the vicinity of the spa and hotel green park areas, an artificial lake, walking and cycling paths and areas suitable for picnics and family excursions will be created.
After bathing it is worth visiting the village too. Egerszalók’s sights include the beehive stones found on the edge of the village and the cave homes cut into rhyolite tufa. One of the favourite excursion destinations is the lake swollen from the water of the Laskó stream, which with its wildlife (in particular birdlife) is of significant natural interest. The village’s rhyolite tufa cellars, where the wine producers of the area serve delicious wines, are an excellent tourism experience. Egerszalók is just 5 km from Eger with its world-famous castle. The exotic Turkish listed buildings, the Minaret, and the Turkish Bath are also among the city’s attractions. The city boasts architectural masterpieces such as the Lyceum, the Basilica, the City Hall, the Minorite Church, and countless Baroque-style public buildings, which still define the city’s image and atmosphere today.
